Where the name comes from

“Zalgo” started in 2009 as a Something Awful forum meme where classic comic strips were edited so the characters slowly dissolved into black-eyed horror, captioned with corrupted text. The text effect kept the name. Technically it is nothing supernatural: it uses the Combining Diacritical Marks block (U+0300–U+036F), 112 accent characters meant for writing languages like Vietnamese or Yoruba.

Questions players ask

Can Zalgo text crash a phone?
Normal Zalgo text doesn’t. Extremely long stacks can slow an app down while it lays out the text, which is why Discord, Twitter and some games cap how many marks they draw.
How do I remove Zalgo text?
Paste it into a Unicode normaliser or simply delete and retype the name. The base letters underneath are ordinary letters.
Why do some sites block it?
Heavy Zalgo text covers the lines above and below it, so forums and chat apps often strip combining marks beyond a limit to keep conversations readable.
