Where fancy text works on Discord

FieldLimitFancy text?
Display name32Yes. Shown everywhere unless a server nickname overrides it.
Server nickname32Yes, per server. Needs the Change Nickname permission.
About Me190Yes, including frames and symbols.
Channel names100Text channels are lower-cased and spaces become dashes, but bold, script and bubble letters survive. Voice channels keep spaces.
Role names100Yes.
@username32No. Lower-case letters, digits, underscore and period only.

Fancy fonts vs. Discord’s own formatting

Discord already understands Markdown in messages (full cheat sheet and live preview on Discord text formatting): **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strike~~, # heading and -# small text. That formatting only works inside messages. Names, bios and channel titles ignore Markdown, which is why people use Unicode letters instead: they are real characters, so they look the same wherever they are pasted.

One trade-off: screen readers read many of these characters as maths symbols (“mathematical bold capital N…”) or skip them. On a server where accessibility matters, keep role and channel names in plain text and save the styling for your own name.

Questions players ask

Why can’t I use fancy fonts in my Discord username?
Since Discord’s 2023 username change, the unique @username only accepts lower-case a–z, 0–9, underscore and period. Put the styled version in your display name instead; that is what people see in chat.
Some letters show as boxes on my friend’s phone. Why?
The boxes (often called tofu) mean their device font has no drawing for that character. Bold, italic, script and double-struck letters are supported almost everywhere; look-alike styles such as runic or syllabics are less reliable.
Does fancy text count as more characters?
Often, yes. Discord counts the way browsers do, and the maths-style letters take two slots each. A 16-letter name in bold serif uses 32, the whole allowance. The counter on each row shows the real number.
How do I change my font on Discord?
Discord doesn’t let you pick a font for messages or names. You can change the app’s text size under Settings → Appearance, use Markdown like **bold** in messages (see Discord text formatting), or paste styled Unicode letters from this generator.
How do I get small text in Discord?
In messages, start a line with -# for grey subtext. In names and bios, use the Tiny superscript or Small caps style above.
Can a server block fancy nicknames?
Yes. Moderation bots often have a “dehoist” or “normalize names” setting that resets nicknames with special characters so members stay searchable and mentionable.
