Where small caps come from

Most of these letters come from the International Phonetic Alphabet and phonetic extensions, where small capitals stand for specific sounds (ʀ is the French uvular r, ɢ a sound heard in some Arabic dialects). Unicode never encoded a full small-caps alphabet: there is no small-cap Q or X in everyday fonts, so ǫ and x fill in. Because they count as a single character each, small caps are the cheapest fancy style for tight limits such as Free Fire’s 12 characters.

Questions players ask

Why do Minecraft servers use small caps?
Minecraft’s default font has pixel drawings for them, so they look native in chat, scoreboards and item names, unlike most other Unicode styles.
Why don’t Q and X look small?
Unicode has no widely supported small capital Q or X. The generator uses ǫ and x, the closest look-alikes.
